Roaming Free, 2023

Roaming Free is a body of work developed during my MA, combining painting and text to explore the relationship between figure and landscape. The works present a solitary female figure moving through a shifting terrain, where body and environment begin to merge. The accompanying poem functions as both narrative and structure, positioning the paintings as fragments within a wider, imagined world.

Roaming Free

She wandered

through the hills

a cloth around her frame

The landscape rugged

WILD

with no one else to claim

She moved with a stride

that spoke of a restless soul

and in her eyes

was a fire

that would not grow old

She was a woman of the earth

unyielding and tough

With spirit that refused

to give in

to lifes rough

Her hair was the wind

her laughter a roll of thunder

she walked through the moors

and

she’d walk forever under

The streams ran by

the trees whispered in the breeze

she took it all in

like a lover taking its leave

And when she danced

she danced

like the hills were alive

Like the landscape was a lover

and

she was its wife

She was a woman of strength

a woman of grace

She roamed through the wilds

without a trace of chase

She was with the land

a bond that wouldn’t break

A reminder that even in the rough

there is still

beauty

to take
